It is named for the Waiapu River. The diocese was established in 1858. The seat of the Bishop of Waiapu is the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist in Napier. William Williams was appointed the first Bishop of Waiapu.〔(Pre 1839 foreigners in NZ )〕 His son and grandson also held the position: Leonard Williams,〔(NTETC )〕 and Herbert Williams. Williams was followed by Bishop Edward Stuart. Bishops of the Diocese of Waiapu have included Alfred Walter Averill and Paul Reeves, see . The most recently departed Bishop of Waiapu was David Rice, who was Bishop of Waiapu from 2008-2014, and who departed to become Bishop of San Joachim in California.
